Expert Solution
Step 1

Answer- Cell membrane also called as plasma membrane is the outermost layer of all the living cells in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

It is made up of lipid bilayer having hydrophilic heads on the outer and inner side and middle portion have hydrophobic tails. This polarity and lipid nature of the plasma membrane allows selective transport of the ions and other nutrients.

In the plasma mambrane there are many integral proteins, pheripheral proteins, Sugar molecules and some cholesterol molecules present on the surface.

Step 2

Integral proteins help solely in the transportation (Facilitated transport) of other nutrients and solutes in and out of the cell which can not be diffused directly through lipid bilayer.

Nutrients can be transported by active and passive transport. Active transport requires ATP whereas passive transport does not requires ATP as an energy source.
