Please calculate the depth to the plastic centroid from the compression face, dpc, and the design capacity in pure compression, Nuo. a) b) c) Please determine whether this column is short or slender. Please calculate the design capacities at balanced failure, Nub and Mub d) Regardless of your answer to the previous part, consider the column to be slender. An inverted T RC column is proposed. Its cross-section and reinforcement is shown in the sketch below. The concrete characteristic strength is to be fc' = 32.MPa. The column can be considered to be braced with an unsupported length Lu = 10.0 m. The idealised end restraint conditions are shown in the sketch below. The nominal axial compression loads (including self-weight) that the column is to carry are:
Permanent action (G), NG = 2000 kN and Imposed action (Q), NQ = 1000 kN.
The line of action of the applied axial loads is at an eccentricity of e = 1 00 mm. The direction of the eccentricity is such that the induced moment will cause tension at the face with 4N32 reinforcement. The eccentricity and expected BMD for the column are shown in the sketch below (this BMD represents a single curvature along the length of the column). For consideration of the induced moment, I have calculated that the radius of gyration is r = 221 mm about the horizontal axis.
