Social norms and shared cultural values often define human reality. Theories of criminality have often tended to locate 'wrong' behavioral pattern of criminals as embedded in the physical and psychological set up of the individual who chooses to deviate from the accepted social norms. However, like all other social actions, if crime or deviance is viewed as socially constructed (because no act is inherently deviant in nature), it is possible to identify the socio-cultural context which gives birth to criminal behavior. In an attempt to do so, it also becomes important to investigate the reason certain behavior come to be regarded as crime and why certain groups of person receive differential treatment and are labeled as criminals.
