Expert Solution
Dealing with personality types
The variety of personality types makes it a complex endeavor to deal adequately and effectively with people in our social environment. Some common mistakes occur in dealing with people across the spectrum of personality types, which might result in much misunderstanding and conflict.
A good way to deal with such conflict in our personal and professional lives would be to be aware of personality types and apply certain methods to deal with them. Some common ways in which we can be prepared to deal with various personality types in informal and formal situations are as follows:
- Be aware of the differences: This is the crucial first step in dealing with various personality types. Before we can hope to interact with various personality types, it is important to know what they are and what the typical behaviors people belonging to those types perform are. This will allow us to predict their emotions and responses to a certain extent, and allow us to empathize with them. This will also allow us to not simply label them negatively because of our differences with them.
- Exercise objectivity: This means that when interacting with people across personality types, it is a good idea to accept them the way they are. This simply means that instead of forcing others to conform to our own beliefs of how they should be, it is better to see them for who they are and behave accordingly.
- Respect cultural differences: It is the reality of the social world that people behave differently simply because they come from different cultures. Some cultures may promote certain behaviors that we do not approve of in our own culture, and that may make dealing with individuals from that culture difficult. respecting cultural differences means taking a neutral view of them as human beings whose personalities have been influenced by their culture, just as ours have been by our culture as well.
- Be curious and ask questions: Being curious about people with different personalities allows us to take a look into their psychological worlds, which may otherwise be completely inaccessible to us. Keeping an open mind and asking questions bridges the gap in communication and understanding and removes any residual feeling of tension or non-acceptance.
- Find superordinate goals: Superordinate goals are goals that various individuals can set in common and can cooperate in achieving. Setting such goals with people with different personalities not only brings us closer to our common goals but also allows us to learn about how people with varying personalities think and solve problems when brought together.
- Polish communication skills: Communication skills are a vital skill set in the 21st century and can greatly enhance our personal and professional lives. Clear, precise, and adequate communication can serve as the distinguishing factor between cooperation and conflict. Thus, in dealing with those with various personality types, understanding the type and tailoring our communication skillfully will reap benefits for us.
