A person driving her car at 47.0 km/hr approaches an intersection just as the traffic light turns yellow (see figure below). She knows that the yellow light lasts only 1.80 s before turning to red, and she is a distance D = 32.0 m away from the near side of the intersection. If she decides to stop, how far from the intersection will she come to a stop? The intersection is W =16.0 m wide. Her car's maximum deceleration is -5.80 m/s2. Ignore the length of her car and her reaction time. Assume the beginning of the intersection the origin of your x-coordinate and take distances beyond the intersection to be positive and distances before the intersection to be negative.
The car can accelerate from 47.0 km/hr to 67.0 km/hr in 6.00 s. How far from the intersection will she be when the light turns red?

- P3.50 from textbook) A chinook salmon, which is a type of fish, has a maximum underwater speed of 3.58", but it can jump out of water with a speed of 6.26. To move upstream past a waterfall the salmon does not need to jump to the top of the fall, but only to a point in the fall where the water speed is less than 3.58; it can then swim up the fall for the remaining distance. Because the salon must make forward progress in the water, let's assume it can swim to the top if the water speed is 3.00" or less. Assume the water has a horizontal speed of 1.50 as it passes over the top ledge of the waterfall. m A) Draw a picture that captures all important information for this situation. Assume the water undergoes projectile motion once it leaves the ledge.arrow_forwardA Boeing 747 "Jumbo Jet" has a length of 59.7 m. The runway on which the plane lands intersects another runway. The width of the intersection is 21.3 m. The plan decelerates throught the intersection at a rate of 5.79 m/s2 and clears it with a final speed of 39.0 m/s. - A golfer is teeing off on a 170.0m long par 3 hole. The ball leaves with a velocity of 40.0 m/s at 50.0 degrees above the horizon. Assuming that she hits the ball on a direct path to the hole, how far from the hole will the ball land (no bounces or rolls)? Include a drawing and all steps. Use the projectile motion equations.arrow_forwardA cheetah spots a Thomson's gazelle, its preferred prey, and leaps into action, quickly accelerating to its top speed of 30 m/sm/s, the highest of any land animal. However, a cheetah can maintain this extreme speed for only 15 ss before having to let up. The cheetah is 270 mm from the gazelle as it reaches top speed, and the gazelle sees the cheetah at just this instant. With negligible reaction time, the gazelle heads directly away from the cheetah, accelerating at 4.6 m/s2m/s2 for 5.0 ss, then running at constant speed. Does the gazelle escape? Yes, the gazelle will run more than the cheetah could run at all during the gazelle's acceleration. No, the cheeatah will approach the gazelle during its acceleration. Yes, but in order to escape gazelle needs to maintain the constant speed for a while. No, the cheeatah will approach the gazelle during its run at a constant speed.arrow_forwardWater drops fall from the edge of a roof at a steady rate.
