Part 1: Privilege
Read the following two lists about White Privilege and Male Privilege and then choose two privileges on each list (that’s 4 altogether). Discuss the privileges you have chosen. Why have you chosen them? Have you experienced or witnessed someone else having or not having each of those privileges? Name one other type of privilege you think exists in our society.
White Privilege Checklist
This list is based on Peggy McIntosh’s article on white privilege. These dynamics are but a few examples of the privileges which white people have.
On a daily basis as a white person…
- I can arrange to protect my children most of the time from people who might not like them.
- I can take a job with an affirmative action employer without having co-workers on the job suspect that I got it because of race.
Male Privilege Checklist
This list is based on Peggy MacIntosh’s article on white privilege. These are some examples of the privilege that being male provides.
On a daily basis as a male person…
- I can be confident that my co-workers won’t think I got my job because of my sex - even though that might be true.
Privilege refers to the undeserved benefits or advantages that some members of society obtain because of who they are (e.g., their colour, gender, social standing, etc.). These benefits, which can have far-reaching effects on one's prospects and experiences in life, sometimes go unrecognised even by individuals who enjoy them. The advancement of social justice and equality relies on a common understanding of privilege.
