Deglutition refers to the act of swallowing that moves food from the mouth to the stomach. It is facilitated by saliva and mucus and involves the mouth, pharynx and esophagus. It occurs in three stages :

  1. Voluntary stage in which the bolus moves into the oropharynx.
  2. Pharyngeal stage which is an involuntary passage of the bolus through the pharynx into the esophagus.
  3. Esophageal stage which is an involuntary passage of the bolus through the esophagus into the stomach.
