South Africa's original inhabitants include the native populations of the Khoi Khoi, the Bantus, the Xhosas, and others. They practiced agricultural activities, hunting, and gathering and were in close contact with each other.

The Dutch East India Company was the first to create a European Settlement in Cape Town in Modern South Africa (SA) in the year 1652. It was only after the Dutch first settled, the other European powers came and established their colonies. The English were one of the last imperial powers to arrive in SA and they would stay on for the longest. After the arrival of the Dutch, they also started trading slaves from other parts of Africa, especially the East.

With the arrival of the Europeans, conflicts began between the colonists and the native communities.
