Introduction:

Filariasis is caused by the filarial worm, Wuchereria bancrofti.

It causes a disease known as Elephantiasis.

Life History: Wuchereria bancrofti has a long thread like white body tapering at either end the adult male and female worm are 40 mm and 80 mm long respectively. They live in the lymphatic vessels and glands of humans, their primary host. The worm is viviparous. The female delivers young worms called Microfilariae. The latter shift to deep blood vessels, mainly to lungs. At night they migrate to superficial blood vessels of the skin and are sucked by Culex fatigan mosquito, the intermediate host and vector. Here they develop into infective larvae in about 10 days and migrate to the mouth parts of mosquito. When an infected mosquito bites a human host, the larvae escape onto the skin. They enter the blood via the puncture hole left by the mosquito and infect the new host. From the blood, they migrate to the lymphatic vessels and lymphatic glands. Here they grow into adults in about a year. The adult worm live for some 5-8 years.
