Question

lewis structure and  molecular geometry for SF4, PCl3, and SO3

Expert Solution
Step 1

a) The molecule given is SF4.

Central atom in the molecule SF4 will be the least electronegative element S with 6 valence electrons.

Since there are 7 valence electrons in each F atom.

Hence each F atom will make only 1 bond with the S in the molecule.

Hence S will make total 4 bonds using 4 out of 6 of its valence electrons.

Hence S will be left with 2 valence electrons i.e 1 lone pair electron or 1 non-bonding electron pair.
