Kiernan is a 5th year Math teacher. He has been at Podunk Middle School all five years and was just asked to join the School Study Team as a regular member. Other members on the team include Barnaby (English teacher), Chamiqua (counselor), Carson (Special E d teacher), Amy (Social Studies teacher), and Claire (vice-principal). At the first meeting, a new P E teacher named Jose came in to discuss his difficulties with a particular student. Kiernan was impressed to see Jose guide the team through the problem solving steps he had learned in one of his education classes. Nearly everyone participated in the discussion and brainstorming, except Claire. It seemed that when it came time to evaluate the suggestions (many of which seemed great to Kiernan and to Jose), Claire found reasons they would not work. She cited financial concerns, legal implications and time constraints. Kiernan offered ways to mitigate these concerns and still keep the crux of the suggestions but Claire simply said “no”. Kiernan was somewhat surprised to hear the others then agree with Claire, except for Jose who said nothing. Claire then referred back to one of her ideas and the others enthusiastically agreed that it would be a good starting point. Kiernan tried to tie it once again in with the other suggestion, finding a way to incorporate them both, but again Claire vetoed the idea. Jose seemed to tacitly accept the idea but left without much enthusiasm.   1. What is the potential cause of the conflict?   2. What conflict management styles are used by the key characters?   3. What should be done next? What are potential solutions?
