It is often noted that the United States and many other Western societies are characterized by high levels of individualism. So much so that many people think of the individual self as opposed to society and social interactions. We are often told to find our “innermost selves” and to ignore what others think of us. Drawing on at least two of the theorists we’ve studied, explain what is misguided about a purely individualistic understanding of the self.
