Question
It has been observed that some persons who suffer renal failure, again suffer renal failure within one year of the first episode. This is due, in part, to damage from the first episode. The performance of a new drug designed to prevent a second episode is to be tested for its effectiveness in preventing a second episode. In order to do this two groups of people suffering a first episode are selected. There are 31 people in the first group and this group will be administered the new drug. There are 45 people in the second group and this group will be administered a placebo. After one year, 11% of the first group has a second episode and 9% of the second group has a second episode. Conduct a hypothesis test to determine, at the significance level 0.1, whether there is reason to believe that the true percentage of those in the first group who suffer a second episode is more than the true percentage of those in the second group who suffer a second episode? Select the [Alternative Hypothesis, Value of the Test Statistic].
a) [p1 = p2 , 0.2880]

- A researcher is studying two types of medication that both treat hives. 18 out of the random sample of 201 adults given medication A still had hives 30 minutes after taking the medication. 22 out of another random sample of 212 adults given medication B still had hives 30 minutes after taking the medication. Test to see if the proportion of people who still had hives after medicine A is less than the proportion of people who still had hives after medicine B. Use a 0.05 level of significance. The correct hypotheses are: O Ho: PA HA PA Ho: PA HA PA O Ho: PA HA PA = PB PB(claim) The p-value is: PB PB(claim) PB PB(claim) Since the level of significance is 0.05 the critical value is -1.645 (round to 3 places) The test statistic is: (round to 3 places)arrow_forwardAn antidepressant has historically been known to relieve depression for 80% of patients who use the drug. The drug's formula was changed recently to include a smaller dose of its main, active ingredient. Due to this change, a medical researcher suspects that among all people with depression who use the new version of the drug, the proportion, p, of people who find relief is lower than 80%. A random sample of 215 patients who use the new version is selected by the researcher, and 159 of them find relief from depression. Based on these data, can we support the researcher's claim at the 0.05 level of significance? Perform a one-tailed test. Then complete the parts below. Carry your intermediate computations to three or more decimal places and round your answers as specified in the table. (If necessary, consult a list of formulas.) The also recruited 38 women and they randomly placed half the participants into the treatment group and the other half into the control group. One group was given 25 grams of chia seeds twice a day, and the other was given a placebo. The subjects volunteered to be a part of the study. After 12 weeks, the scientists found no significant difference between the groups in appetite or weight loss. Which of the following is true. (i) This is an observational study (ii) Blinding is used in this study because subjects in the control group recieved a placebo, so that htey were blinded to the treatment they recieved. (iii) We can safely generalize the conclusion (that chia seeds have no significant effect on appetite or weight loss) from the participants to the population at large because randomization is used when assigning participatns to groups.arrow_forward
- Two different blood pressure medicines are being compared to determine if the average reduction in blood pressure is the same for each medication. The goal of the study is to determine if the medications differ. Twenty men age 50-60 years old are selected for the study. Ten men are chosen at random to receive the first medication and the other 10 men receive the second medication. Each of the 20 men is monitored for one month to determine the change in blood pressure over that time. Minitab provides the 95% confidence interval for (mu1 - mu2) (2.63, 14.18) a. Interpret this 95% CI. b. What assumptions (be specific) are necessary to construct this CI?arrow_forwardThe General Social Survey is completed by adults living in the United States. In 2016 and 2018, respondents who were not living with both of their parents were asked why. In 2016 (group 1). 581 out of 1008 said that the reason was that their parents were divorced or separated. In 2018 (group 2), 483 out of 644 said that the reason was that their parents were divorced or separated. For the alternative hypothesis that there is a difference between the two years (Ha: P2 - P₁ does not equal O), what is the test statistic? Round your answer to two decimal places. Make sure to include a negative sign if appropriate.arrow_forwardA hypothetical study looks at the effect of drinking alcohol on health. Across all genders and age groups, people who do not drink tend to be healthier on average than people who do drink. However, people who drink regularly are on average healthier than those people who have recently stopped drinking. Is it reasonable to conclude that for the sake of health, we should not start drinking, but if we have already started drinking alcohol, it is healthier to continue and not to stop?arrow_forward
- The mango is considered the "king of fruits" in many parts of the world. Mangoes are generally harvested at the mature green stage and ripen up during the marketing process of transport, storage, and so on. During this process, about 30% of the fruit is wasted. Because of this, the impact of harvest stage and storage conditions on the postharvest quality are of interest. In this experiment, the fruit was harvested at 80, 95, or 110 days after the fruit setting (the transition from flower to fruit) and then stored at temperatures of 20∘C, 30∘C, or 40∘C. For each harvest time and storage temperature, a random sample of mangoes was selected, and the time to ripening was measured. What are the factors, the treatments, and the response variables? Take each item from the answer bank and place into the appropriate category.arrow_forwardSarah believes that completely cutting caffeine out of a person's diet will allow him or her more restful sleep at night. In fact, she believes that, on average, adults will have more than two additional nights of restful sleep in a four-week period after removing caffeine from their diets. She randomly selects 8 adults to help her test this theory. Each person is asked to consume two caffeinated beverages per day for 28 days, and then cut back to no caffeinated beverages for the following 28 days. During each period, the participants record the numbers of nights of restful sleep that they had. The following table gives the results of the study. Test Sarah's claim at the 0.05 level of significance assuming that the population distribution of the paired differences is approximately normal. Let the period before removing caffeine be Population 1 and let the period after removing caffeine be Population 2. Bariatric surgery is done to replace the size of the stomach in various ways. It is typically used on only obese patients, and one the traditional form of the surgery, gastric bypass has a 1% mortality (death) rate caused by surgery. However, in the studies reporting on the effects of the surgery on Type ll diabetes, 1417 of 1846 diabetic patients recovered completely from diabetes after surgery. These patients no longer need medication like insulin (which is injected into the skin) or pills to help manage blood sugar. In a study released a decade later, the percentage of patients who recover from diabetes has increased 80%. Using confidence intervals determine whether this is a significant change from the 2004 data. Use n=2000arrow_forward
- Many golfers wear wrist bracelets containing magnets because they claim the magnets improve balance and the length of shots played off the tee. A golfer would like to determine if the claim has merit and finds 200 volunteers who play golf to participate in an experiment. Half of the golfers are randomly assigned to wear a bracelet with magnets, while the other half wear a bracelet without magnets. Each golfer plays normally for a month, after which the length of their shots in a subsequent round is recorded. What is the response variable in this experiment? the age of each golfer the 200 volunteers the length of shots played by the golfers whether the golfers wear or do not wear the braceletarrow_forwardIt has been observed that some persons who suffer colitis, again suffer colitis within one year of the first episode. The following are known: ● Hondas failed at a rate of 1 in 344. ● Fords failed at a rate of 1 in 80. ● Audis failed at a rate of 1 in 27. Determine the probability that a randomly selected vehicle from this dealer will experience engine failure.arrow_forward
