Isabel Myers was a pioneer in the study of personality types. She identified four basic personality preferences that are described at length in the book Manual: A Guide to the Development and Use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, by Myers and McCaulley.† Marriage counselors know that couples who have none of the four preferences in common may have a stormy marriage. A random sample of 377 married couples found that 291 had two or more personality preferences in common. In another random sample of 573 married couples, it was found that only 17 had no preferences in common. Let p1 be the population proportion of all married couples who have two or more personality preferences in common. Let p2 be the population proportion of all married couples who have no personality preferences in common.

You select your sample population and begin making your observations. As the research progresses, you suspect that a number of the subjects exhibit behavioral changes simply related to their knowledge of being enrolled in the study and the increased attention they are receiving as subjects. Alison Konrad and Claudia Harris sought to compare northern U.S. and southern U.S. men on their judgments of the desirability of 40 masculine, feminine, or androgynous traits. The following pas- sage is from the article “Heart Care Reflects Race and Sex, Not Symptoms” (USA Today, February 25, 1999, reprinted with permission):Previous research suggested blacks and women were less likely than whites and men to get cardiac cathe- terization or coronary bypass surgery for chest pain or a heart attack. Scientists blamed differences in illness severity, insurance coverage, patient preference, and health care access. The researchers eliminated those differences by videotaping actors—two black men, two black women, two white men, and two white women—describing chest pain from identical scripts. They wore identical gowns, used identical gestures, and were taped from the same position. Researchers asked 720 primary care doctors at meetings of the American College of Physicians or the American Academy of Family Physicians to watch a tape and recommend care. The doctors thought the…arrow_forwardThe Myers-Briggs Personality Type Inventory is a commonly used tool toarrow_forward
- A clinical psychologist is interested in determining which type of therapy is in fact more effective at treating depression. The psychologist randomly assigns 1/3rd of the participants to receive cognitive behavioral therapy, 1/3rd to receive the psychodynamic therapy and 1/3rd to receive humanistic therapy. Following the therapy sessions, the psychologist gives the members of each group the Beck Depression Inventory and compares the scores of the three groups. 1 What hypothesis test would be most appropriate for answering this research question and why? 2 If the researcher found that at least one of groups differed, what type of follow-up test would be most appropriate? 3 What are the independent and dependent variables (if any)?arrow_forwardThe following table shows a data set containing information for 25 of the shadow stocks tracked by the American Association of Individual Investors (aaii.com, February 2002). Shadow stocks are common stocks of smaller companies that are not closely followed by Wall Street analysts. Successful hotel managers must have personality characteristics often thought of as feminine (such as "compassionate") as well as those often thought of as masculine (such as "forceful"). The Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) is a personality test that gives separate ratings for female and male stereotypes, both on a scale of 1 to 7. A sample of 148 male general managers of three-star and four-star hotels had mean BSRI femininity score y = 5.29 The mean score for the general male population is μ = 5.19. Do hotel managers, on the average, differ significantly in femininity score from men in general? Assume that the standard deviation of scores in the population of all male hotel managers is the same as the σ = 0.78 for the adult male population. (a) State null and alternative hypotheses in terms of the mean femininity score μ for male hotel managers. (b) Find the z test statistic. (c) What is the P-value for your z? What do you conclude about male hotel…arrow_forward
