Is this an appropriate activity and learning objective for this age group? Why or why not? What sub-skills in Piaget's Concrete Operational are being used? How do you know? In what ways does this activity meet social-emotional needs of this age group? Which of Gardner's multiple intelligences are being activated in this activity? How do you know?
Background
Andrew is the teacher of a class of 5th graders (average age 10). He decides to start by teaching them how to convert ounces into pounds.
Before he does that though, he wants to start with an engaging inquiry activity.
He has the students pair up, and gives some groups scales that measure the weight in ounces, and some groups scales that measure the weight in pounds. He gives each group the same objects even if the scales are different.
After they weigh the items, they pair up with someone from a group who had a different measurement on their scale. The people who measured objects in ounces are now grouped with people who measured in pounds. They find that objects that weighed 1 pound are also equal to 16 ounces. This launches them into a lesson about how to convert pounds to ounces.
