Question

Indian views sometimes left our history of the west because it's written by most American historians(none native). It was hard to get information about them. Also, Indian were seen as an obstacle or "losers" so writing about or listening to their views would make Americans look bad. The overall motive was to make American history a story of "positive change". Historians had to consider if the primary source was reliable or not when analyzing native American sources. A time came when historians would only believe in something if it was written because human memory would not be a reliable source as we tend to forget things. but historians were getting written documents from small groups who knew how to read and write so a lot of ordinary people didn't get to express themselves. Indian primary sources contributed to our understanding of westward expansion by expressing their opinions about the expansion. Although a lot of their experiences, memories, and thoughts didn't make it into written records. But they made it through generations which represents a huge resource to contribute to your understanding of the westward expansion.
