I am reviewing methods of assessing systems in heat transfer. One of the method I have run across for looking at single pass heat exchangers is log mean temperature difference (LMTD). What is the advantage of using LMTD instead of the basic/arithmetic difference in temperatures?
Heat Exchangers
Heat exchangers are the types of equipment that are primarily employed to transfer the thermal energy from one fluid to another, provided that one of the fluids should be at a higher thermal energy content than the other fluid.
Heat Exchanger
The heat exchanger is a combination of two words ''Heat'' and ''Exchanger''. It is a mechanical device that is used to exchange heat energy between two fluids.
log mean temperature difference (LMTD) is used in heat exchangers to analysis of steady state heat transfer. It is the logarithmic average of temperature difference between hot fluid and cold fluid flowing across the heat exchangers. It is also said to be driving force which amounts for the heat exchanged between hot and cold fluid.
