In water, a hydrogen bond is a type of intermolecular force that occurs between a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom (usually oxygen or nitrogen) and another electronegative atom in a nearby molecule. In water, the hydrogen bond forms between the hydrogen atom of one water molecule and the oxygen atom of a neighboring water molecule.

The hydrogen bond in water is relatively strong compared to other intermolecular forces, such as London dispersion forces and dipole-dipole interactions. It gives water many of its unique properties, including its high boiling point, high surface tension, and the ability to dissolve many substances.
