In liquid-liquid extraction two immiscible phases, generally aqueous and organic, are taken and put into a separatory funnel. The compounds in the two phases redistribute themselves according to their relative solubility in the two phases.

Step 2

If a solute is to be separated using liquid-liquid extraction a term called distribution coefficient is defined. It is the concentration of the solute in the organic phase to the concentration of the same solute in the aqueous phase. It is the equilibrium constant for the process.
