How does hegemonic masculinities affect teenagers? What are the threats and how can we address the issue?
Hegemonic masculinity is a term introduced by R.W. Connell in her gender order theory. The term hegemony refers to manifestation of authority or dominance by one group over another. In terms of masculinity, hegemonic masculinity can be defined as the practice which validates the dominant position of men in the society and proposes to explain those actions and ideas which promote gender inequality and dominance of one group of men over other minority groups of men.
Since teenage is the age where the values and ideas learned from the society are inculcated in the personality of a teenager, the concepts such as hegemonic masculinity affect the thinking of a teenager in a negative way. The teenagers who are exposed to such ideas through the people around them, unconsciously end up manifesting these in their behavior and start practicing them.
