Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful method for identifying unknown compounds. HNMR spectroscopy looks for hydrogen nuclei in molecules, while C NMR spectroscopy looks for carbon nuclei. By analyzing the chemical shifts, abundances, and coupling constants of the H NMR and C NMR signals, interactions between functional groups and carbon atoms in the molecule can be determined and then this information has been used to determine the structure of the molecule.
