How did the writings of Blackstone influence American Political Philosophy, and what evidence for this influence is seen in Tocqueville's observations of American political life?
To this day, William Blackstone's commentaries mostly on laws of England remain the most widely read and discussed work of its kind. He earned a law degree from Oxford and worked for a short time in that field before becoming elected as a member of All Souls College. His wildly well-attended classes on English law for undergraduates provided the foundation for his later writings. From 1761 until 1770, he was a member of Parliament, and in 1770, he was elevated to the position of justice also on the Court of Common Pleas.
Tocqueville was the pen name of Alexis Charles Henri Clerel, Comte de Tocqueville, a French nobleman, political philosopher, and historian. Among his many books, Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution have brought him the most renown.
