The self expresses through expressions. The expressions can be verbal symbols i.e. language or their substitutes that the individual uses to convey the information. Individuals always want to present a sense of self that is acceptable by others. He wants to ensure sufficient harmony so that interaction can be sustained even if means deceit or fraudulence. Goffman characterizes this central interest as impression management. Any establishment can be studied from the view of impression management.
In order to maintain a stable self-image, people try to hide their real selves and act in front of others. As a result of his interest, Goffman focuses on dramaturgy i.e. people always do dramatic performances like those performed on stage. This helps in impression management.
