Smooth muscle is an involuntary muscle which shows no cross stripes under microscopic magnification. It consists of narrow spindle shaped cells with a single centrally located nucleus. It is utilized by different systems to apply pressure to vessels and organs. It is composed of sheets or strands of smooth muscle cells. These cells have strands of actin and myosin which run through the cell and are backed by a system of other proteins. Muscles can be categorized as voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary muscles are those muscles which work according to one’s desire or control whereas involuntary muscles are not under one’s control. Skeletal muscles are voluntary and smooth muscles are involuntary. It does not have clearly defined striations visible on the cells.
