White blood cells (leukocytes) are a significant part of an individual's immune system. These cells protect the body against any kind of infection and microorganisms. The leukocytes are subcategorized into the following types:

Granulocytes: The cells which possess granules. These are further classified as:
1. Neutrophils: Normal value- 40 to 75 %
2. Eosinophils: Normal value- 1 to 4 %
3. Basophils:Normal value- 0 to 1 %

Agranulocytes: Cells that do not possess granules. These are further classified as:
1. Monocytes: Normal value- 2 to 8 %
2. Lymphocytes: Normal value- 20 to 45 %

These cells can get affected in various ways in specific conditions:

WBC count determines the number of white blood cells in an individual's blood, whereas differential leukocyte count measures the percentage of the five types of leukocytes present in the blood. The differential count also determines any abnormalities and immature leukocytes.
