In climbing stairs, the force is equal to the weight w=mg where m is mass and g is gravity of the object and the distance is equal to the height of a flight of stairs. This height will be in the metric unit of distance, the meter. Even though you will run up at an angle, you will only need to know the height you climb. Work then becomes:
