Question
For the following cases, you may use either the P-value approach or the rejection region approach to present a full hypothesis test, including:
- Identifying the claim and H0 and Ha,
- Finding the appropriate standardized test statistic,
- Finding the P-value or the rejection region,
- Deciding whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis, and
- Interpreting the decision in the context of the original claim.
- The Western blot assay is a blood test for the presence of HIV. It has been found that the test sometimes gives false positive results for HIV. A medical researcher claims that the rate of false positives is 2%. A recent study of 300 randomly selected U.S. blood donors who do not have HIV found that 5 received a false positive test result. Perform the appropriate hypothesis test at α = 0.05.

The physical therapist states the proportion of adults that receive a physical therapy treatment plan due to sciatica is less than 0.30. If we would like to test the physical therapist's claim with a hypothesis test using a significance level of α=0.10 , which of the following choices are true? Select the correct answer below: There is a 10% chance we will conclude p=0.30, but is in fact p<0.30. There is a 10% chance of rejecting the null hypothesis. - The table below includes results from polygraph (lie detector) experiments conducted by researchers. In each case, it was known if the subjected lied or did not lie, so the table indicates when the polygraph test was correct. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that whether a subject lies is independent of the polygraph test indication. Do the results suggest that polygraphs are effective in distinguishing between truth and lies?
