Question
For many large, global companies that do business in emerging market countries, the risk of corruption is a part of everyday life. Without bribing public officials in those countries, these companies could never build a factory, hire employees, get permission to build infrastructure, sell their products, or conduct other business functions. Shipping merchandise and other items in or out of these countries can be equally difficult, with customs agents in these countries demanding unofficial or “grease” payments to allow shipments to be made.
- If you worked for one of these global companies, how would you respond to being asked by a senior executive to pay a bribe to a foreign government official to obtain or retain business?
- Are bribes and “grease” payments a necessary part of doing business abroad and what can be done to lessen the risk?

- Organized criminals who have long trafficked drugs are diversifying into humdrum areas of commerce—particularly food, booze and cheap consumer goods. For example, some 22 tons of long-grain rice being sold as pricier Basmati were recently seized as part of an operation led by Interpol and Europol, respectively the world’s and Europe’s police agencies.
