Federated Electronics, Ltd., manufactures display screens
and monitors for computers and televisions, which it sells
to companies around the world. It wants to construct a new
warehouse and distribution center in Asia to serve emerg-
ing markets there. It has identified potential sites in the port
cities of Shanghai, Singapore, Pusan, Kaohsiung, and Hong
Kong and has estimated the possible revenues for each
(minus construction costs which are higher in some cities
like Hong Kong). At each site the projected revenues are
primarily based on these factors, (1) the economic condi-
tions at the port including the projected traffic, infrastruc-
ture, labor rates and availability; and expansion and
modernization; and (2) the future government situation
which includes the political stability, fees, tariffs, duties,
and trade regulations. Following is a payoff table that
shows the projected revenues (in $ billions) for six years
given the four possible combinations for positive and nega-
tive port and government conditions:Determine the port city Federated should select for its new
distribution center using the following decision criteria:
a. Maximax
b. Maximin
c. Equal likelihood
d. Hurwicz ( .55)

Each comedy skit requires 2 hours of rehearsal time, costs 3000, and brings in 20,000 from the shows sponsors. Each musical number requires 1 hour of rehearsal time, costs 6000, and generates 12,000. One of the claims made repeatedly by U.S. officials is that many Japanese manufacturers price their goods higher in Japan than in the United States, in effect subsidizing low prices in the United States by extremely high prices in Japan. According to the U.S. argument, Japan accomplishes this by keeping competitive U.S. goods from reaching the Japanese marketplace. In trade parlance, this practice of subsidizing the discounted price charged in an open market by charging a premium price in a captive market is known as dumping. An economist decided to test the hypothesis that higher retail prices are being charged for Japanese automobiles in Japan than in the United States. She obtained independent random samples of 50 retail sales in the United States and 50 retail sales in Japan over the same time period and for the same model of automobile, and…arrow_forwardIn recent years, the United States and Japan have engaged in intense negotiations regarding restrictions on trade between the two countries.
