Concept explainers
Explain vegetative reproduction through layering. Give examples.
Vegetative reproduction the asexual means of reproduction of the plant wherein the new plants grows from a.part of the plant or from specialized reproductive organs.
Vegetative reproduction are of different types.
Layering is the development of the roots on the stem on exposure to a suitable rooting medium with the stem still attached to the parent plant.
Layer is rooted stem when it is separated from the parent plant. Soft horizontal stem arising from a parent plant like in case of strawberry , raspberry are called as runners. These stems run along the ground in contact with the soil giving rise to several roots at points of contact. This can grow into new plants on separation from the parent plant.
Uses of layering:
- Many plants can be produced from a single plant.
-Does not require any special techniques or methods.
- Addirional care not required until new plant still attached to the patent plant.
- this helps to produce new, fresh roots that sustains better.
