fact that some conflicts between ideologies, nations, and people can result in war, others can lead to
better understanding. An analysis of history can be found in Conflict and Compromise. Compromise
and conflict go hand in hand. Conflicts occur when there are disagreements on various issues and a
compromise is needed to resolve them. Mahatma Gandhi, for instance, was a leader of the masses in
India in the 1930s who believed in non-violence, civil disobedience, and satyagraha. Gandhi's Salt
March was one of the consequences of the British's atrocities in India. It was therefore perceived as a
violation of Indian rights when the British sought to tax salt, something that they freely used from their
coasts. He refused to set up a committee to investigate the excesses of the police in India and rejected
independence from India. A compromise was also reached by Gandhi, who suspended the Civil
Disobedience Movement and said he would attend the next Round Table Conference to discuss India's
future. Colonial India embodied conflict and compromise in this way during the 1930s. In spite of many
calling this a retreat by Gandhi, historians also emphasize that this was the first time the government
had offered a compromise and truce. This was to acknowledge the Indians' rights. Thus, conflict and
compromise were seen as part of Modern World History extending beyond the United States.
