Question

Explain the General Features of Elimination ?

Expert Solution
Introduction:

Haloalkanes on treating with suitable reagent some atoms or groups are eliminated to form the alkene and this process is known as elimination reaction. In elimination reaction, saturated hydrocarbon gets changed to unsaturated ones. Elimination reaction is the reverse of addition reaction.

Explanation:

There are two important elimination reactions E1 and E2 elimination reaction.E2 reaction is a concerted, one step reaction. The proton and bromide ion are removed in the same step, so no intermediate is formed. The reaction of tert-butyl bromide with hydroxide is an example of E2 reaction; E stands for elimination and 2 stands for bimolecular. The product of elimination is an alkene.

Chemistry homework question answer, step 2, image 1

The relative rate of alkyl halides in E2 reaction is: RI>RBr>RCl>RF

The regioselectivity of E2 reaction is determined by the Zaitsev’s rule. This rule states that the double bond goes mainly toward the most highly substituted carbon. More substituted alkene should be the major product of E2 reaction.

The relative reactivities of alkyl halides in E2 reaction is:

Tertiary halide> secondary halide> primary halide
