Explain the details of vitamin B12 absorption
Expert Solution
Step 1
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin required for genetic material production and to suppress a variety of biological reactions and some medical problems, most generally hematopoietic disorders and neuropathies involved with the spinal cord. Often known as cobalamin or cyanocobalamin.
Step 2
- Vitamin B12 is a well-known water-soluble vitamin required to avoid a variety of metabolic responses and medical problems, most generally hematopoietic disorders and neuropathies associated with the spinal cord. Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the free form.
- It binds to R-binders or transcobalamin I which is the transporter specific protein it is synthesized by both the salivary glands and the gastric mucosal cells in the stomach
- If the protein-bound form of vitamin B12 is absorbed, then it must induce proteasomal degradation in the stomach or duodenum, where it binds to the R-binding agent and joins the duodenum for more cleavage.
- The pancreas will naturally produce extra protease upon entrance into the second part of the duodenum, which will then weaken the R-binders that hang on to vitamin B12. It is at this stage that for the remaining of its path to the ileum of the small intestine for absorption, vitamin B12 binds to or complexes with intrinsic factors.
