Question
Explain Implications of the general bearing capacity equation.
Expert Solution
Step 1
The bearing capacity of soil is the ability of soil to withstand the loads acting at the base of the structure. Based upon the consideration of stresses and settlement, the bearing capacity of soil is classified into three types as follows:
- Ultimate bearing capacity qf – The bearing capacity or the stress at which the sudden settlement or failure of foundation occurs is termed as the ultimate bearing capacity. It indicates the ultimate load which the foundation can support.
- Allowable bearing capacity qa – The bearing capacity or the stress up to which the foundation is safe against stability and settlement is termed as the allowable bearing capacity. It is obtained by applying Factor of Safety Fs on the ultimate bearing capacity.
- Net bearing capacity qn – The difference between the ultimate bearing capacity and the overburden pressure of soil is termed as the net bearing capacity.
