Question

Explain how plastic deformation is caused in the materials.

Expert Solution
Step 1

When there is change in the shape and the size of an object due to the applied force and the change in temperature this is known as deformation or strain.

This deformation can be classified as longitudinal, lateral, elastic, plastic depending upon the applied force and the shape and size of the object.

Different types of  deformation or strain -

Elastic Deformation – The deformation caused is temporary, and the deformed body regains its shape after the removal of applied forces.  Example - Stretching of a rubber band which regains its regain its shape after force is removed.

Plastic Deformation – The deformation is permanent and it stays even after the removal of the applied forces. Example- bending of steel rods.

Plastic deformation is seen in many objects, including: Plastics, Soils, Wood, Rocks, Metals, Concrete.
