Question

Explain how an external factor (e.g., genetic condition, infectious illness, or environmental agent) affects structures of the female reproductive system and predict the ultimate effect on fertility.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The reproductive system is one of the organ systems of the body associated with the production of gametes; it comprises of different organs according to the sex of the individual, and the female reproductive system, along with the production of gametes, is also specialized to carry the developing offspring within its body till it is fully developed.

Step 2

The reproductive health of an individual is affected by several factors which may alter both the structural and functional development of the reproductive organs.

  • Effects of genetic conditions on the female reproductive system - Genetic makeup is the foundation of gender differentiation, and any changes in the sex chromosomes result in poor development of sex organs, which leads to infertility. For example, in the case of Turner syndrome, there is poor development of ovaries.
  • Effects of infections on the female reproductive system - Infectious diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia can result in inflammation and blockage of fallopian tubes, which in turn prevents fertilization.
  • Effects of environmental agents on the female reproductive system - Environmental agents like toxic chemicals or radiations are also known to affect reproductive health. For example, exposure to lead or radiations of X-Rays decreases the fertilizing capacity of eggs and thus causes infertility.
