The operon is a unit of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in which multiple genes that function in the same pathway are clustered together. They have a common promoter that transcribes the downstream genes as a single unit called polycistronic messenger RNA (ribonucleic acid). The translation of each gene occurs separately to produce distinct proteins. This is due to the presence of different ribosome-binding sites for each gene of the operon. This type of arrangement is found in prokaryotic genomes.
