Question

Distinguish between Simple epithelium and compound epithelium.

Expert Solution
Simple epithelium and compound epithelium:

The epithelial tissue is a simple tissue. It is the covering or protective tissues in the animal body. Epithelium covers most organs and cavities within the body. It forms a barrier to keep different body systems separate. The cells of the epithelial tissue are tightly packed and form a continuous sheet. They have only a small amount of cementing material between them and there are little or no intercellular spaces. All epithelium is separated from the underlying tissue by an extracellular fibrous basement membrane. The basement membrane contains a special form of matrix protein called collagen. Based on the arrangement of layers, the epithelial tissues are classified into two types namely, simple epithelium and stratified or compound epithelium.
