Detail how your system works with this other system to maintain homeostasis (involve as many regulated variables as you can). Describe a way in which the two systems interact (different from #1) that especially appeals to you, or that you have experienced yourself. Detail a way in which your system is dependent on this system, or how this system is dependent upon yours.

Question

This individual assignment should provide 1) an overview of your assigned system, with a focus on its importance in maintaining overall body homeostasis, and 2) some specific ways in which your system interacts with each of the others.  Your assignment will address these two ideas visually, using a concept map.  Visio is a great product you can use (access the Visio software through the MySacState portal by clicking on Office 365, and then using the apps icon in the menu bar to navigate to “All apps” and then select Visio); also, hereLinks to an external site. is an article describing other free sources.

YOUR voice and language must clearly emerge from the writing. You will be marked off if your writing reads like a textbook or is overly complex; rather, elements of individuality and creativity should show up.   Language should be at a level that someone in high school would understand.  There are three general steps to the assignment:

Step 1 of the concept map will focus on how your system affects homeostasis.   Choose at least three regulated variables which are in some way affected by your system.

Then, using connecting lines between your system and each variable, detail HOW your system is able to influence the homeostatic balance of the variable.  You must include as much detail as possible (see grading rubric; detail and creativity in choosing the variables and describing the interactions with that variable are closely assessed). But, please be concise with your language.   NOTE:  you may make a “key”, such that a number corresponds to another space on the page where you write, but the idea is to be succinct, even while you include detail.

Step 2 requires you to expand your map to connect to the other five systems within the Debates.  For EACH other system, you must:

  • Detail how your system works with this other system to maintain homeostasis (involve as many regulated variables as you can).
  • Describe a way in which the two systems interact (different from #1) that especially appeals to you, or that you have experienced yourself.
  • Detail a way in which your system is dependent on this system, or how this system is dependent upon yours.

These three points of focus should again be brief, but accurate, described on the connecting lines that you create between your system and each of the others ones.  So, you should have three lines between your system and each of the other five.

Step 3 requires you to explain how each of the other systems (not yours) interact with each other.  Choose one unique way to illustrate the interaction between each of the other systems. Creativity in your choice of interaction here matters!

EXAMPLE:  If you are from Team Digestion, in Step 1, you would choose three regulated variables that Digestion influences, and describe in detail how you affect them.  In Step 2, you’d address the three requirements (above) for Digestion and CV, Digestion and Resp, Digestion and Nervous, Digestion and Endocrine, and Digestion and Renal.  Then, for Step 3, you’ll pick one unique way in which CV interacts with Resp, then CV with Renal, then CV with Nervous, then CV with Endocrine.  Next, Resp with Renal, Resp with Nervous, Resp with Endocrine.  Then Nervous with Endocrine, Nervous with Renal, and finally Endocrine with Renal.  NOTE that you don’t repeat interactions here; that is, once you’ve done CV with Resp, you don’t need to also do Resp with CV.
