Describe the objectives of intervention in speech pathology
Speech or language disorders are among the most common developmental difficulties in childhood.
They are called
- Primary:If there is no known aetiology
- Secondary:If they are caused due to other conditions like autism, impairment of hearing,general developmental difficulties or neurological impairements.
So patients have either a primary speech disorder but not a language disorder or vice versa.
Speech disorders can affect one or several of following areas:
- Phonology:pattern of sound
- Vocabulary: Words that patient can say and understand
- Grammer:way that language is constructed
- Morphology: meaningful changes to words
- Skills of narratives(ability of relating a sequence of ideas)
- Pragmatic language (ability to understand the meaning of others and effective communication)
Interventions for patients identified having primary speech or language disorders include a variety of practices which are specifically designed for promotion of speech and development of language . Interventions are also designed with an aim to remove the barriers to participation in society.
Assessment of eligibility for interventions includes many combination of standard assessment.Communicative performance and linguistic performance is observed.
Generally, interventions are time limited and can be delivered through any group of professionals mostly the speech language therapist or pathologist.
