A biomolecule is a carbon-based organic compound that is produced by a living organism and required by living organisms for nutrition. More than 25 naturally occurring chemical elements are found in biomolecules, primarily consisting of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Biomolecules are divided into two broad categories:
Macromolecules : These are larger molecules which have high molecular weight (more than 1000 Dalton) and are mostly polymers of small biomolecules such as polysaccharides, polypeptides and nucleic acids.
Micro-molecules :The small biomolecules have low molecular weight (less than 1000 Dalton) such as sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides.
