Describe the function of surfactant.
Describe the function of surfactant.
Respiration is defined as the movement or transport of oxygen from the external environment into the cells present within the tissues and the transport or movement of carbon dioxide from the cells to the external environment in the opposite direction.
Surfactant is defined as the film of a fatty substance secreted by the pulmonary alveoli's granular cells. The functions of surfactant are as follows:
(1) Surfactants play an important role in lowering or reducing the surface tension at the air-liquid interface and will, therefore, prevents the alveoli from collapsing at the end of exhalation.
(2) Surfactants interact with the pathogens and are responsible for killing the pathogens or preventing the spread of pathogens (dissemination).
(3) Surfactants are also responsible for modulating or regulating the immune system responses.
