Title: The effect of ethylene production on the unripe banana when are stored together with pear in a bag. 

Hypothesis: Ethylene is a plant hormone released as a gaseous state into the air by rapidly growing tissues and it affects the surrounding fruits. Iodine solutions bind to the starch of the plant by forming a dark complex. So the darker the fruit, the lesser the content of starch which means the fruit is unripe and vice versa. The lighter color of fruit represents a more ripening status of fruit.

Variables.

Independent variable: Concentration of ethylene

Dependent variable: Conversion of starch into sugar (ripening of fruit).

Control (describe at least 2): 

  1. A total of 8 bags will be made, Bags 1-4 will be the control group and 5-8 will be the test group.
  2. Put 1 unripe pear in each of the control bags. Seal each bag and one unripe pear and 1 banana in each of the test bags and seal them. 
  3. Place all the bags together and record the observations from the initial appearance to the final appearance of the fruit each day.
  4. after few days the ripening status of them is tested by staining them with the iodine solution.

Method:

  • After preparing the iodine solution, pour the iodine stain into a shallow tray and dip it with a half-cut pear.
  • Allow the fruit to absorb the stain and remove and rinse it with water.
  • Repeat the step by adding more stain as needed to observe the ripening status.
