Question

Compare different designs and suggest your design to estimate location of fault somewhere (between two building) in underground cable by taking some suitable values.

Expert Solution
Step 1

In the last few decades, underground cables are laid instead of overhead lines because they are not affected by weather conditions, rainfall, pollution, etc. However, faults occur everywhere. The fault in underground cable occurs due to many reasons such as weakness of cable, insulation failure, breaking of the conductor, defects in cable, etc. When the fault occurs in the cable it is difficult to figure out the exact location of the fault. Thus, an underground fault distance locator is used.

Different types of faults on cable:

  1. Open-circuit fault: These faults occur due to interruption in the conduction path and break the flow of current. The current in the underground cable becomes zero.
  2. Short-circuit fault: These faults are more dangerous than open-circuit faults. They are of two types:
  • Symmetrical fault: All the three-phases are short-circuited and thus also called three-phase faults.
  • Unsymmetrical fault: The magnitude of the current is not equal in all the three-phases and phases are separated by 120 degrees.
