Step 1: The Concept

An electrochemical cell is made up of two half-cell compartments and carries out the conversion of the chemical energy of a spontaneous reaction into electrical energy.

Both half-cell compartments have a metal rod/stripe called the electrode, that is dipped in a suitable electrolytic solution. 

Each electrode (anode or cathode) has a certain standard electrode potential that measures its ease of getting reduced. 

The difference between the standard electrode potentials of the cathode and the anode is called the standard cell potential.
