Simplify the general energy balance so as to represent the process in each of the following cases. Number each term in the general balance, and state why you retained or deleted it.
a. A bomb calorimeter is used to measure the heating value of natural gas. A measured volume of gas is pumped into the bomb. Oxygen is then added to give a total pressure of 10 atm, and the gas mixture is exploded
using a hot wire. The resulting heat transfer from the bomb to the surrounding water bath is measured. The final products in the bomb are CO2 and water.
b. Cogeneration (generation of steam for both power and heating) involves the use of gas turbines or engines as prime movers, with the exhausted steam going to the process to be used as a heat source. A typical installation
is shown in Figure.
