Step 1: nucleotide sequence mutation
The genetic material is the DNA, it is made up of small subunits called nucleotides. These nucleotides in different arrangements forms code for amino acids (triplet = 3 letters in different arrangements of A/G/T/C forms sequence for amino acid) ( see genetic code for this).
Any changevin the sequence of these nucleotides may change the sequence in the amino acids which in turn affects protein translated.
