Briefly discuss the differences in domestic violence between at least two of the cultures in Leeder's article. In India, women battering is very common. However, only a few would admit to their husbands abusing them. Most women battering is caused by a drunken husband. (Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:248). They could beat their wives if they had a good reason to but the only way for someone to intervene is if it was an uncalled-for reason. (Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:249). It is sad to think about it because your husband can beat you if he thinks you are misbehaving in any way. However, wife battering is not the only common abuse, child abuse has also increased significantly over time. In Africa, there was a law that was passed to help protect wives and children from abuse. (Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252). However, this did not stop the silent abuse that happened behind closed doors. It is crazy to think about how a man can abuse his wife but if the wife fought back in any way it would be seen as a criminal act. Law enforcement will not do or say anything because they believe it is just their culture. However, this is not the end of some crucial facts but young girls are forced to be cut up and have procedures done to be more attractive when it comes time for marriage. (Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252). The difference between these two cultures is that Africa partakes in wife battering, child abuse, and even against human rights. As for India it mainly talked about wife battering and how it is normal for wife battering depending on the wife's behavior. Each culture made this violence common, which is why others do not interfere when they encounter these actions because they believe it is just their culture.
