Bleomycin (MM 1500) also known as Blenoxane is an anticancer drug used to treat breast
cancer and Hodgkinson's disease. Bleomycin forms a complex with ferrous iron that is
believed to represent the active form of the compound. The stoichiometry of the ferrous
complex was first determined using the mole-ratio method.
Using the data in the table below determine the stoichiometry of the ferrous bleomycin
complex. Increasing amounts of 1.01 mM ferrous iron (ferrous sulfate was used) were
added to 0.2-mL (how many microliters is this?) aliquots of a solution of bleomycin prepared
by the dissolution of 4.5 mg bleomycin in 5-mL of degassed water, pH 7.0 (this means
oxygen has been removed, why?). A 60-μL aliquot of each resulting solution was analyzed
in a 1-cm micro-cuvet.
