Denitrification is the microbial process that converts nitrate and nitrite to gaseous nitrogen forms, primarily nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen (N2). A wide variety of microorganisms can denitrify. Denitrification occurs as a result of changes in the oxygen (O2) concentration in their immediate surroundings.
